    - Sesame is the oldest oilseed crop known to humanity.
    - The genus has many species, and most are wild. Most wild species of the genus Sesamum are native to sub-Saharan Africa. S. indicum, the cultivated type, originated in India.
    - Archaeological remnants suggest sesame was first domesticated in the Indian subcontinent dating to 5500 years ago.
    - Charred remains of sesame recovered from archeological excavations have been dated to 3500-3050 BC.
    - There are claims that suggest trading of sesame between Mesopotamia and the Indian subcontinent occurred by 2000 BC. It is possible that the Indus Valley Civilization exported sesame oil to Mesopotamia, where it was known as ilu in Sumerian and ellu in Akkadian.
    - Excavations of King Tutankhamen uncovered baskets of sesame among other grave goods, suggesting that sesame was present in Egypt by 1350 BC.
    - Archeological reports indicate that sesame was grown and pressed to extract oil at least 2750 years ago in the empire of Urartu.

    - Sesame has been called a survivor crop. This is because it is a robust crop that needs little farming support - it grows in drought conditions, in high heat, with residual moisture in soil after monsoons are gone or even when rains fail or when rains are excessive.
    - Sesame seed is rich in oil, contains high amounts of (83-90%) unsaturated fatty acids, mainly linoleic acid (37-47%), oleic acid (35-43%), palmitic (9-11%) and stearic acid (5-10%).
    - Sesame seeds contain a group of phenylpropanoid compounds, namely lignans, an innate non-enzymatic antioxidant defense mechanism against reactive oxygen species which play a vital role in health promotion.
    -  Sesame oil has burn healing effects, when rubbed on the skin soothes a minor burn or sunburn, as well as helps in the healing process.
    - Sesame oil is ideal massage oil due to its excellent emollient properties. When applied topically, it aids in healing the chronic diseases of the skin.
    -  In India, it has been used as an antibacterial mouthwash, to relieve anxiety and insomnia and in the treatment of blurred vision, dizziness and headache.
    - Sesame oil is naturally antibacterial for common skin pathogens such as Staphylococcus and Streptococcus as well as common skin fungi such as athlete's foot fungus.
