    - Originated in Ethiopia where it was domesticated from about 2000 BCE
    - It then spread to India.

    - It is also grown in some parts of Europe.

    - Niger Seed is a concentrated source of energy, protein and iron. In fact, a study carried out by Hazra and Taklikar in a group of anemic women in 2015, showed that supplementation of 25 grams of Niger Seed chutney for 30 days significantly improved their haemoglobin levels.
    - It is also a rich source of linoleic acid, which is an essential fatty acid.
    - The major polyunsaturated fat in Niger Seed Oil if C18:2, which is an Omega-6 essential fatty acid. It also has low levels of monounsaturated fat (4.7% - 7.3%). This is good news for health benefits but makes Niger Seed oil less ideal as a 'frying oil'. It can, however, used as an oil for sauteeing and as a salad oil.

    - Application of Niger Seed Oil on joints helps in Rheumatoid Athritis. In Bundelkhand region, a thick paste of stem and leaves of Niger Seed plant is used for treatment of Rheumatoid pain, as well.
    - Sprouted Niger Seeds mixed with garlic is used to treat cough. It can be used twice to thrice a day to treat the same.
    - Niger Seed poultices applied to body parts help alleviate pain, itching, swelling, inflammation, abscesses and boils.
