Grass pea is one of the oldest cultivated crops with a long history of domestication. It was identified in the oldest excavations in India. According to the legend, grass pea was brought to Ethiopia (Abyssinia) by the queen of Sheba after visiting King Salomon in the tenth century BC.

History

Grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) is one of the oldest cultivated crops with a long history of domestication. In archaeological excavations in Turkey and Iraq, seeds of Lathyrus species
had been found as collected or cultivated items.

Similar seeds from 2500 BC were identified in the oldest excavations in India and already in the Balkan in 8000 BC. According to the legend, grass pea was brought to Ethiopia (Abyssinia) by the queen of Sheba after visiting King Salomon in the tenth century BC.
