    Description

    Groundnuts originated in South America. It is estimated that groundnuts were introduced in India by the Jesuit Fathers who followed Vasco de Gama. The indigenous variety that is now prevalent in India is likely of Brazilian origin.

    Studies have reported a reduced risk of diabetes by a quarter when groundnuts were incorporated in diet.

    Unsaturated fats, certain vitamins and minerals, and the bioactive components have shown to have cancer-preventative effects, which are all packaged into a peanut kernel.

    Peanuts are known to have beneficial effects on cholesterol, primarily due to their unsaturated fats.

    Peanuts are a vital source for introducing most of the water-soluble vitamins into the human body along with Vitamin E which is fat soluble.

    History

    By the middle of the nineteenth century, the largest area under groundnut cultivation was reported in South Arcot district of Madras State. A local businessman, Govindaiyer played a significant role in promoting the cultivation of groundnuts in the Madras provinceby introducing
    double cropping and establishing oil extraction units.

    In the Saurashtra region of Gujarat State, Maharaja Bhagvatsinhji pioneered the growing of groundnuts in his own dominion.
