Groundnuts originated in South America. It is estimated that groundnuts were introduced in India by the Jesuit Fathers who followed Vasco de Gama. The indigenous variety that is now prevalent in India is likely of Brazilian origin.

Studies have reported a reduced risk of diabetes by a quarter when groundnuts were incorporated in diet.

Unsaturated fats, certain vitamins and minerals, and the bioactive components have shown to have cancer-preventative effects, which are all packaged into a peanut kernel.

Peanuts are known to have beneficial effects on cholesterol, primarily due to their unsaturated fats.
