Description
First domesticated in the Sahel region of West Africa, Pearl Millet has been grown in
Africa and India since prehistoric times. It was domesticated about 4000 to 5000 years ago.
Pearl Millet has high levels of protein content with excellent balance of amino acids and
relatively high levels of Vitamin A. It is a high energy cereal with higher oil content than maize.
Pearl Millet has a lot of micronutrients but to access them it is important to soak, blanch or ferment the grain.
Pearl millet is excellent to combat malnutrition due to the presence of iron and zinc.
