Groundnuts originated in South America. It is estimated that groundnuts were introduced in India by the Jesuit Fathers who followed Vasco de Gama. The indigenous variety that is now prevalent in India is likely of Brazilian origin.

By the middle of the nineteenth century, the largest area under groundnut cultivation was reported in South Arcot district of Madras State. A local businessman, Govindaiyer played a significant role in promoting the cultivation of groundnuts in the Madras provinceby introducing
double cropping and establishing oil extraction units.

In the Saurashtra region of Gujarat State, Maharaja Bhagvatsinhji pioneered the growing of groundnuts in his own dominion.
