Description
Niger Seed originated in Ethiopia where it was domesticated from about 2000 BCE. It then spread to India.
Niger Seed is a concentrated source of energy, protein and iron. In fact, a study carried out by Hazra and Taklikar in a group of anemic women in 2015, showed that supplementation of 25 grams of Niger Seed chutney for 30 days significantly improved their hemoglobin levels.
Sprouted Niger Seeds mixed with garlic is used to treat cough. It can be used twice to thrice a day to treat the same. Niger Seed, in some tribal communities, is also used for contraception and treatment of Syphilis.
Niger Seed is also an excellent source of the fat soluble Vitamin K which is essential to reduce the risk of heart disease, kills cancer cells and enhances skin health.
Niger Seed poultices applied to body parts help alleviate pain, itching, swelling, inflammation, abscesses and boils.
